Women
are theoretically safe in India. The old practices of child marriage, sati,
prevention of widow remarriage and female infanticide are illegal on paper.
Women now participate in areas such as education, sports, law enforcement,
military, politics, media, art, and culture, service sectors, space travel and
science and technology. Yet more than 45% do not feel safe in their immediate
environment. Rape, sexual harassment, dowry demands and murders are reported
every day.
Many
Women in ancient India were warriors. They were trained in warfare and
responsible for the safety of the family hand household. They felt a lot safer
than the modern woman. Some queens led the army out in battle and defeated
invaders. Tarabai, a warrior queen and her army managed to hold off Aurangazeb
for quite some time. The Maurya kings used female bodyguards as they were
equally strong, trained and talented, less likely to consume alcohol and more
loyal. Women served as frontline soldiers and reserve troops.
Silambam
benefits women in many ways. It keeps them young, agile, strong and fit. It
boosts immunity. It helps shed the fat accumulated in childbearing and middle
age. The chemical released by the body helps regulate hormones, so that menstrual
cycles become regular and painless and fertility is guaranteed.
